Around The NFC West

Posted Dec 24, 2013

A look at the Cardinals' division rivals

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Last time out: 49ers 34, Falcons 24

Record: 11-4 overall, 4-1 in division

Snapshot: Linebacker NaVorro Bowman returned an interception 89 yards for a score with 1:10 remaining in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. The Falcons had just recovered an onside kick and looked poised to either tie the game or take the lead as they drove down the field, but Bowman quickly put an end to that thought.

Notable: The 49ers clinched a playoff spot with the victory. Had they lost, it would have set up a play-in game against the Cardinals in Week 17. San Francisco can win the NFC West with a win over Arizona in Week 17 and Seahawks’ loss to the Rams.

Quotable: Coach Jim Harbaugh on the win, which came on his 50th birthday: “It’s the best birthday present I’ve ever gotten,” he told 49ers.com. “Second only to being born.”

Key number: 199. Rushing yards for the 49ers on 30 attempts, a 6.6 per-carry average.

Next up: The 49ers play at Arizona in Week 17.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Last time out: Cardinals 17, Seahawks 10

Record: 12-3 overall, 3-2 in division

Snapshot: The Seattle defense intercepted Cardinals’ quarterback Carson Palmer four times but the offense was shut down. Palmer found Michael Floyd for a go-ahead 31-yard touchdown pass with 2:13 left in the fourth quarter and Karlos Dansby clinched the win with an interception.

Notable: Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson was just 11-of-27 for 109 yards with a touchdown and interception. The passing yardage was a career low. Seattle had a 1st-and-goal from the 3 late in the first half but didn’t score after three stuffed plays and a missed 24-yard field goal by Steven Hauschka.

Quotable: Seahawks coach Pete Carroll on the Cardinals’ goal-line stand: “We should be able to knock that one in,” he said. “We’ve been great in the red zone. We’ve been doing all kinds of good stuff, and today we just couldn’t get it. We had trouble in all phases with them.”

Key number: 14. The consecutive home victory streak snapped.

Next up:  The Seahawks host the Rams in Week 17.

ST. LOUIS RAMS

Last time out: Rams 23, Buccaneers 13

Record: 7-8 overall, 1-4 in division

Snapshot: The Rams held Tampa Bay to 170 total yards in the win. Zac Stacy rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown while the Buccaneers were held to 2.6 yards per carry on 23 attempts.

Notable:  Defensive end Robert Quinn had three sacks on the day to increase his league-leading total to 18. His final one set a new team record, passing Kevin Carter’s total from 1999.

Quotable:  Quarterback Kellen Clemens, on the team’s second straight victory after being eliminated from playoff contention: “We’re a team that unfortunately is not going to the playoffs, but you would not know it by the way we’ve continued to work and show up on Sundays,” he told stlouisrams.com.

Injury update: Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long suffered a torn ACL and MCL early in the first quarter.

Next up: The Rams play in Seattle in Week 17.
