Cardinals Promote Scouts

Long-time scout Boyd becomes team's assistant director of pro scouting

New assistant director of pro scouting Malik Boyd works in the draft room prior to last week's NFL draft.

With the draft over, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim has shifted some pieces around in his personnel and scouting departments, growing that part of the football operations again.

Malik Boyd, just named NFC Scout of the Year in February by the Fritz Pollard Alliance, was promoted to assistant director of pro scouting. Previously the team’s Western Regional Scout, Boyd, who joined the team in 2005, will move to the team’s Tempe headquarters.

Replacing Boyd as Western Regional scout is Chris Culmer, who had already been scouting the western part of the country. Luke Palko, who had been scouting in the Southeast, will now be the cross-checker in the East.

Zac Canty was the team’s representative for the National Football Scouting service, and now he will cover the northeast area. Former Cardinals running back Josh Scobey, who had been working as a pro scout since joining the front office full-time in 2012, transitions to college scout taking the western area previously seen by Culmer.

John Ritcher is moving to scout the southeast.

Two of the Cardinals’ scouting assistants also earned promotions. Glen Fox is taking Scobey’s pro scouting spot, while Darius Vinnett will replace Canty with the NFS. Keim is expected to hire two more scouting assistants in the future.

Before the draft, Keim said it was important to groom those coming through as scouts, just as he had been when he first started working for the Cardinals as a scout 15 years ago.

"It’s my duty," Keim said. "There were people like (former GM) Rod Graves who took valuable time when they didn’t have to and worked with me. I feel like I owe it to the next guys. Bruce (Arians) and I have talked, our goals is to have coaching staffs and personnel staffs that we groom guys. We bring them through the system to one day branch out."
